Important Parts of a Loom | Heald Shaft | Sley | Shuttle | Shuttle Box | Picker | Reed | Warp Beam | Back Beam | Breast Beam | Cloth Beam

1 .Heald Shaft
This part is related to the shedding mechanism. The heald shaft is made of wood or metal such as aluminium. It carries a number of heald wires through which the ends of the warp sheet pass. The heald shafts are also known as ‘heald frames’ or ‘heald staves’. The number of heald shafts depends on the warp repeat of the weave. It is decided by the drafting plan of a weave.

The main function of the heald shaft is as follows:

(i) It helps in shed formation
(ii) It is useful in identifying broken warp threads
(iii) It maintains the order or sequence of the warp threads
(iv) It determines the order of lifting or lowering the required number of healds for a pick. In other words it helps in forming the design or pattern in a fabric.
(v) It determines the warp thread density in a fabric, i.e. the numbers of heald wires per inch determine the warp thread density per inch.

2 .Sley or lay
It is made of wood and consists of the sley race or race board, reed cap and metal swords carried at either ends. The sley mechanism swings to and fro. It is responsible for pushing the last pick of weft to the fell of the cloth by means of the beat up motion. The sley moves faster when moving towards the fell of the cloth and moves slower when moving backwards. This unequal movement is known as ‘eccentricity of the sley’. It is needed in order to perform the beat up and also to give sufficient time for passage of shuttle to pass through the warp shed. The beat up of the lastly laid pick of weft is accomplished through a metal reed attached to the sley.

3 .Shuttle
It is basically a weft carrier and helps in interlacement of the weft with the warp threads to form cloth. The shuttle which is made of wood passes from one end of the loom to the other. It travels along the wooden sley race and passes between the top and bottom layers of the warp sheet. The shuttle enters a shuttle box fitted at either ends of the loom, after passing through the warp shed. A shuttle normally weighs about 0.45 kgs.

4 .Shuttle Box
It is the housing for the shuttle and is made of wood. It has a spindle and a picker. It may also accommodate the picker without spindle. The top and side of the box towards the sley race are open. The shuttle dwells inside the box for the intermediate period between two successive picks.

5 .Picker
The picker is a piece made either of leather or synthetic material. It may be placed on a spindle or grooves in the shuttle box. It is used to drive the shuttle from one box to another. It also sustains the force of the shuttle while entering the box.

6 .Reed
It is a metallic comb that is fixed to the sley with a reed cap. The reed is made of a number of wires and the gap between wires is known as dents. Each dent can accommodate one, two or more warp ends. The count of the reed is decided by the number of dents in two inches. The reed performs a number of functions which are enumerated as follows:

(i) It pushes the lastly laid pick of weft to the cloth fell
(ii) It helps to maintain the position of the warp threads
(iii) It acts as a guide to the shuttle which passes from one end of the loom to the other.
(iv) It determines the fineness of the cloth in conjunction with the healds.
(v) It determines the openness or closeness of the fabric.

There are various types of reed such as ordinary reed, gauze reed, expanding reed, V reed etc.

7 .Warp Beam
This is also known as the weaver’s beam. It is fixed at the back of the loom. The warp sheet is wound on to this beam. The length of warp in the beam may be more than a thousand metres.

8 .Back Beam
This is also known as the back rest. It is placed above the weaver’s beam. It may be of the fixed or floating type. In the first case the back rest merely acts as a guide to the warp sheet coming from the weaver’s beam. In the second case it acts both as a guide and as a sensor for sensing the warp tension.

9 .Breast Beam
It is also known as the front rest. It is placed above the cloth roller at the front of the loom and acts as a guide for the cloth being wound on to the cloth roller. The front rest together with the back rest helps to keep the warp yarn and cloth in horizontal position and also maintain proper tension to facilitate weaving.

10 .Cloth Beam
It is also known as the cloth roller. The woven cloth is wound on to this roller. This roller is placed below the front rest. It is also known as the cloth roller. The woven cloth is wound on to this roller. This roller is placed below the front rest.

Flow Chart of Wet Processing | Process sequence of Wet processing Technology | Process Flow Chart of Wet Processing

In which way grey fabric is dyed is called wet process technology. Normally wet processing depends on buyer's demand. Suppose your buyer wants the more precised dyed fabric; so in this fact you should mercerize your fabric during the dyeing pre-treatment process. Basically if the buyer don’t want that so called particular fabric there is no need to mercerize your fabric.

Grey Fabric Inspection:
After manufacturing fabric it is inspected in an inspection Table. It is the process to remove neps, warp end breakage, weft end breakage, hole spot.

Stitching:
To increase the length of the fabric for making suitable for processing is called stitching. It is done by plain sewing m/c.

Brushing:
To remove the dirt, dust, loose fibre & loose ends of the warp & weft threads is known as brushing.

Shearing / Cropping:
The process by which the attached ends of the warp & weft thread is removed by cutting by the knives or blades is called shearing. Shearing is done for cotton & cropping for jute. After Shearing or cropping fabrics goes under singeing process.

Singeing:
The process by which the protruding / projecting fibres are removed from the fabrics by burning / heat to increase the smoothness of the fabric is called singeing. If required both sides of fabric are singed.

Desizing:
The process by which the sizing mtls (starch) are removed from the fabric is known as desizing. This must be done before printing.

Scouring:
The process by which the natural impurities (oil, wax, fat etc) & added/external/adventitious impurities (dirt, dust etc) are removed from the fabric is called scouring. It is done by strong NaOH.

Souring:
The process by which the alkali are removed from the scoured fabric with dilute acid solution is known as souring.

Bleaching:
The process by which the natural colours (nitrogenous substance) are removed from the fabric to make the fabric pure & permanent white is known as
bleaching. It is done by bleaching agent.

Mercerizing:
The process by which the cellulosic mtls/substance are treated with highly conc.NaOH to impart some properties such as strength, absorbency capacity, lusture is known as mercerizing. It is optional. If the fabrics are 100% export oriented then it is done by highly conc. NaOH (48-52° Tw).

Dyeing :
A process of coloring fibers, yarns, or fabrics with either natural or synthetic dyes.

Printing:
A process for producing a pattern on yarns, warp, fabric, or carpet by any of a large number of printing methods. The color or other treating material, usually in the form of a paste, is deposited onto the fabric which is then usually treated with steam, heat, or chemicals for fixation.

Then finishing treatment are done according to buyer requirements and then folding, packaging, and at last delivery.

Costing | Garments Costing | Methods of Textile Costing

Since the industrial beginnings, textiles and apparel have been the leaders in terms of cost awareness as well as product innovations.

Textile Costing includes all the activities like purchase of raw materials and accessories, knitting fabrics, processing and finishing of fabrics, sewing and packing of garments, transport and conveyance, shipping, over heads, banking charges and commissions, etc.

To do perfect garment costing, one must know about all these activities thoroughly about their costs, procedures, advantages and risk factors. Also he must know how to solve the problems when occurred and to take suitable alternate decision immediately in time.

There are always fluctuations in the costs of raw materials and accessories, charges of knitting, processing, finishing, sewing and packing, charges of transport and conveyance. Hence Knowledge Update is required about the latest prices and charges, latest procedures, methods and quality systems, market prices and availability, transportation (road, sea, air) and freight charges, etc.

Quality depends on price; price depends on quality. Each product will have different price according to its quality.

Different Costing methods include :
  • Job Costing,
  • Batch Costing,
  • Contract or Terminal Costing,
  • Single or Output Costing,
  • Process Costing,
  • Operation Costing,
  • Operating Costing,
  • Departmental Costing,
  • Multiple Costing.
Job Costing
Job Costing is done, as the name suggests, on job works which may differ from case to case basis. By giving different job numbers and debiting the costs on the jobs, cost of each job work can be ascertained.

Batch Costing or Batch Costing method
Batch Costing is similar to job costing but pertains to batches.

Contract Costing or Terminal Costing
Contract Costing is done for large contracts. Such businesses need not maintain costs separately as financial accounting will indicate the costs and expenses. In such contracting firms, the cost sheets are maintained for individual contracts. In the absence of expense budgets, inefficiencies are often hidden in such cost sheets.

Single or Output Costing
Single Costing is done when the end product is single like a colliery or a power station. Cost sheets are maintained.

Process Costing
Process Costing is useful when a product passes through various processes, yielding different by products of commercial value. This is useful in industries like refineries.

Operation Costing
Operation Costing is followed by mechanical engineering industries which make products or parts. Each manufacturing operation cost is taken into account. There is no difference between this and process costing.

Operating Costing
Operating Costing method is followed when the company does not have a specific product as output like the service industries.

Departmental Costing
When an end product is ultimately manufactured by different departments this method can be useful.

Multiple Costing
Multiple Costing is useful when a product is manufactured in an assembly line like an automobile. It is important to choose the most appropriate method of costing for your business or industry. Most businesses do not like to engage cost accountants and leave it to financial accountants to take care of this job. It is not recommended. There are many free lance cost accountants available and they can be engaged on need basis.

Batik Printing | Technique of Batik Printing Process

The term "Batik" is an Indonesian-Malay word. Batik is a process of decorating cloth by covering a part of it with a coat of wax and then dyeing the cloth. The waxed areas keep their original color and when the wax is removed the contrast between the dyed and undyed areas gives the pattern. One of the significant features of this art is that it is very simple and can be done by anyone. Colorful batik prints grace the home furnishings with elegance and style. Beautiful bags, household linens, murals and wall paintings with striking batik works enjoy a great demand in the domestic and international market. The batik wall hangings accentuate the walls with their bright colors and motifs. Batik has also made its mark as impressive textile products. Batik printed kurtis, saris and wrappers are the preferred choices of the fashion crazy populace.

Much of the popularity of Batik can be tied to the fact that the batik technique offers immense possibilities for artistic freedom as patterns are applied by actual drawing rather than by weaving with thread.

Another factor in its popularity is the fact that it is so durable. The colors in Batik are much more resistant to wear than those of painted or printed fabrics because the cloth is completely immersed in dye and the areas not protected by resist are allowed to absorb hues to the extent that the colors will not easily fade.

Because of the popularity of batik designs, many batik patterns are used in a wide variety of fabrics. Many fabrics are called batik although they were not made in the resist method. Most purists believe that such cloth has a batik like design but is not true batik which is confined to fabrics made through the application of the originally conceived Javanese methods of resist dyeing.
Modern designers in Indonesia, Malaysia and to a lesser extent Thailand, the Philippines and elsewhere often use batik design elements and often the actual batik clothe in their clothing and accessories.

Batik Technique

The art of batik is a three-stage process of waxing, dyeing and dewaxing (removing the wax). There are also several sub-processes like preparing the cloth, tracing the designs, stretching the cloth on the frame, waxing the area of the cloth that does not need dyeing, preparing the dye, dipping the cloth in dye, boiling the cloth to remove wax and washing the cloth in soap. The characteristic effects of the batik are the fine cracks that appears in the wax, which allow small amounts of the dye to seep in. Batik wax exercises an important function in the process of batik printing. Proper usage of wax results into an impeccable batik work. 30 per cent beeswax and 70 per cent paraffin wax are generally applied. During application wax should not be overheated or it will catch fire. The common batik fabrics that make for excellent batik prints are cambric, poplin, voiles, and pure silk are used. Natural colors derived from barks of trees, leaves, flowers and minerals were used.

Today, tjaping with a copper block is also used to meet the demand of the customers.
